45 year old mosiac graces new library

The new Mary J. L. Black Library isn't open yet, but it already has some vivid artwork to display. The Public Library has re-introduced a mosaic by Ruby Owen called Thunderbird. It is comprised of 27,000 tiles made out coloured glass, ceramics and rocks, and took over a year and a half to complete

Donation for library

The Northern Credit Union has donated 5 thousand dollars to the new Mary J.L. Black Branch Library. The money will support the Children’s Reading Garden at the new facility. Fundraising Chairman, Patrick Morash and Thunder Bay Public Library Acting Chief Librarian, Barb Philp, were at the Northern Credit Union Westfort Branch on Frederica Street to accept the gift.

Library more than halfway to goal

Library officials are pumped about their fundraising efforts. They're trying to raise a quarter million dollars to furnish and stock the new Mary J-L Black Library. Spokesperson Tina Tucker says there are no problems to report.  She says so far 150 thousand dollars has been raised with another 100 thousand to go. Officials released the information as they gave city dignitaries a tour of the library construction site.

Ca$h rolling in for library

Fundraising is off to a good start for the new Mary J-L Black Library.    Organizer Patrick Morash says a month into the campaign they've raised a quarter of the 200 thousand dollar goal.  The latest corporate donation is 5 thousand dollars from Westfort Foods

Library launches $ campaign

The Thunder Bay Public Library is trying to raise a quarter of a million dollars in the community. The campaign is in support of the new Mary J-L Black Branch. Chief Librarian Gina La Force is confident residents will step up.  The money raised will be used to help furnish the new branch.  The Friends of the Public Library kicked the campaign off with a donation of 50 thousand dollars.

Mediation service a first for Counselling Centre

Families in Thunder Bay can now handle some of their legal disputes with the help of the Thunder Bay Counselling Centre. Executive Director Nancy Chamberlain says there are 9 new trained mediators who are available to help.  Program coordinator Connie McLeod says it's designed to keep families and children out of court. 

Matawa first nation holding 2nd annual Governance and Economic Development Conference

The Matawa first nation are holding the 2nd annual community governance and economic development conference this week. Manager of the Matawa First Nation Tribal Council Brian Davey says these issue needs to be looked at to ensure his people are prepared for future business ventures like the Ring of Fire. Davey says the conference will also involve a large number of youth because they are the future leaders and need to be prepared.
