Bear's Body Butchered

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Anishinabek Police are investigating the dismemberment of a black bear on the Fort William First Nation.  Sgt. Rob Pelltier says the bear's carcass was found near the communities garbage dump on May 21st.  The animal's paws were sawed off and it looks like someone tried to take his tongue out.  Officers want to hear from anyone who may have information about the animal's demise.

Candidate For Current River

There's a candidate in place for the Current River riding in the Municipal election. Andy Wolff registered to run in the upcoming October election.  There's been no word if incumbent councillor Andrew Foulds will run.

Civic Election Action On FB

A Thunder Bay man is taking this year's civic election to Facebook.   James Murray, who operates the website Netnewsledger, says he has set up a page on the popular social media site to allow candidates to discuss the issues and be in control of the commentary.   Murray said he hopes the page will help change the dynamic of the election race.  You can access the Facebook page HERE

It's Shoes And Champagne 2

A reality TV star in Canada is coming to Thunder Bay to help Habitat for Humanity raise money.   Jody Claman of the Real Housewives of Vancouver will be here on June 20th to take part in the second Shoes and Champagne event.   That's where designer shoes, signed by celebrities,  are auctioned off.

Local Man Offering Reward

A local stand up comedian is asking for donations from the public to help offer a reward to find the men who allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted a First Nation's woman last month.  Ron Kanutski's posted a 5-hundred dollar reward for what he calls solid information forwarded to the police for the names and arrest of the two men who are believed to be involved in the crime. Several people have already vowed to donate to the cause on Kanutski's Facebook page.

Awareness Walk for Jordan Wabasse

Two Big Trout Lake residents will be walking from their community to Webeque First Nation to raise awareness about Jordan Wabasse.  Wabasse has been missing for a month and was last seen getting off a city bus in Westfort.  You can follow the 500 kilometer walk through the "Help Find Jordan Wabasse" facebook page.

Violence against aboriginal women to be discussed

Thunder Bay's Community Health Centre will be taking part in a meeting on violence against aboriginal women. The Status of Women committee will be in Thunder Bay this Friday, and Chair Dr. Hedy Fry says they want to speak to aboriginal communities. Fry says she wants to see what they tell her about the root causes and the nature of violence being inflicted on first nation women. Fry says any solutions that come from this cross-Canada tour will be created for aboriginals by aboriginals.

NOMA reacts to extension

The Acting President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association is applauding both levels of Government for extending the deadline to complete key infrastructure projects. Dennis Brown says reaching the March 31st deadline was just not possible because of the region's short construction season.  Brown believes Municipal lobbying efforts played an essential role in having the date changed to the end of October.
