Bishop Reacts Carfeully To Morgentaler's Death

The death of Dr. Henry Morgentaler is being treated with mixed reaction .  He died yesterday at the age of 90. While Morgentaler is lauded by supporters as a hero for the right of women to have abortion on demand,  on the other side of the debate is the Catholic Church.  When asked for his reaction to the news of Mortgentaler's death, local local Bishop Fred Coli searched carefully for words.   Coli says he could never agree with  the doctor's attitude and approach to abortion , but agrees he was definitely a newsmaker in his time.

No Local Pushback Over G-S-I's

There will be no resistance from the Catholic Church in the Thunder Bay Diocese to the province's new anti-bullying law.  Bishop Fred Colli says the formation of Gay-Straight Alliances in catholic schools will not be opposed, however he doesn't believe the alliances are the only way to combat homophobia in schools.

Bishop Directs Parishes To Help St. Peter's

The Catholic Church is involved in helping those in the East End whose homes have been hit by flooding.  Bishop Fred Collie says among other things they have allowed St. Peter's Church to be one of the emergency focal points and he's asking other parish churches in the city to get involved by helping St. Peter's through donations or volunteering.

Appointment gets praise from bishop

The Vatican says Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins is among 22 new cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church named today by Pope Benedict. Thunder Bay Bishop Fred Colli calls Collins an excellent candidate for the position saying he's known him for many years having worked with him on committees in the Ontario Assembly of Bishops.  Colli calls the appointment a great honour for Canada.

Bishop agrees with government appeal

The Harper government says it will appeal a court ruling that struck down Canada's prostitution laws.   An Ontario judge ruled the laws unconstitutional.  Thunder Bay Bishop Fred Colli says he is in favour of the appeal saying prostitution is unacceptable.
