Thunder Bay's Young Professionals Network is now sporting a new look board of directors.   They were chosen at during the SHIFT annual general meeting on Thursday night at the Valhalla Inn.   Voted in were Agata doucette, Willow Lem and Kateri Banning-Skaarup

Payback Time

The Mayor is sporting a new do.  Keith Hobbs made a hockey bet over the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins playoff series and he lost.  His worship now has the Canadiens logo painted on the side of his head.  Hobbs says he will keep in on a day or two but admits it's starting to sting a little.

Karate Expo This Weekend

Martial Arts enthusiasts in the city are pumped about the first ever Isshinryu Karate Expo to be held here.   It's being held at the West Thunder Community Centre starting on Friday and running until Sunday.  There will be participants from  Canada, Germany and the United States.    The weekend will include seminars, instruction and testing  

NAN Demands Inquiry

 Members from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Women's Council are in Ottawa today. They're taking part in a ceremony to honour missing and murdered aboriginal women in Canada. They were on Parliament hill for a ceremony that began yesterday and wraps up tonight. They were joined by NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, representatives of women’s organizations, First Nation and other political leaders at a press conference this morning

Funeral Arrangements Set

The funeral arrangements for K9 Unit Constable Joseph Prevett are made.  His police funeral will be held on Thursday with a march from 1805 East Arthur Street to the St. Patrick's Cathedral. A mass will be held at the Cathedral and a formal reception at the main ballroom of the Valhalla Inn.  500 police officers from across North America are expected to attend.

Provincial Leaders Send Condolences

The leaders of the Ontario Liberals and NDP are both commenting on the tragic death of Thunder Bay Constable Joseph Prevett. Andrea Horwath says the death of Constable Prevett is reminder that the work done by police is rarely easy, even during training exercises. Meanwhile, Premier Kathleen Wynne also expressed her deepest condolences to Constable Prevett's family, friends and fellow officers.

Local Businesses Get Hydro Awards

Thunder Bay Hydro is recognizing 4 local businesses today for their leadership to save energy. It's part of the 2014 Retrofit Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Awards.  Jake Allen is Hydro's Energy Services Advisor and says the winners did a great job at conserving electricity.   Badanai Motors, Dufresne's, Smiths RV Centre and Lakehead Marina each participated in Hydro's saveONenergy RETROFIT program over the past year.

McCormack New Chair Of Ontario Chamber

Thunder Bay’s Ian McCormack is the new Chair of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.  He was elected at the organization's AGM this past weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.  McCormack is Registered Professional Forester and Director for Tetra Tech.

Battle Of The Atlantic

The local naval community are paying tribute to those who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War. Thunder Bay Naval Association Spokesperson Rob Cutbush says it's important to remember those who served. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II.  A service will be held at the HMCS Griffon Sunday at 2.

Police Give Out Tickets

Watch For Pedestrians

City police are embarking on their spring pedestrian safety initiative. They recently gave 40 motorists reminders about some of their bad driving habits. They gave out tickets for speeding, stop sign violations, and talking on a cell phone while driving.

LU Student Gives Gym Cash

Lakehead University student Jordan Cash is giving a thousand dollars in cash to the Underground Gym. Cash is a Master of Business Administration student and wanted to volunteer at the gym but couldn't due to his busy school schedule. Instead he decided to raise the money from his classmates and teachers.

Missing Man

Police are asking for assistance as they search for a missing man from Windsor.  It's believed that 30-year-old Brandon Wheeler may be in the Dryden-Kenora area as reports say he may be travelling west to Alberta.  Windsor Police say Wheeler may be under distress and they are concerned about his safety. Wheeler is driving a green 2010 Jeep Wrangler, with Ontario plates ALPD512. Anyone with information is asked to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.

Skittish Dog On The Loose

Members of the Paws for Love Dog Rescue are on the lookout for one of their missing animals. Cushion is a skittish dog from Sandy Lake who broke off his leash recently and is now on the loose in the City. He was last seen in the area of Christina and Mary Street East homes in Westfort.  They say he is very terrified of sounds, people and other dogs and if you spot him contact Animal Services.

Northern Raffle Winner

A Dryden woman is the grand prize winner of the Canadian Red Cross' Northern Raffle.  Jean Allan chose 25-thousand dollars rather than a new car because she's going to use the cash to renovate her kitchen. Proceeds from the raffle support programs such as disaster relief efforts, seniors’ transportation and housing support.

Horwath Says Northerners Like Northern Reps

NDP leader Andrea Horwath believes northerners prefer to have northerners as their MPP at Queens Park.  Derek Parks, the new provincial PC candidate in Thunder Bay-Superior North, lives in Cambridge. Horwath note both NDP candidates in Thunder Bay are lifelong residents of the city. Horwath says northerners would like to have someone in the legislature who can understand their voice from a position of experience.

Attempted Robbery On South Franklin Street

City police are looking for a 30 year old man who they believe attempted to rob a convenience store on South Franklin Street yesterday afternoon.  They say a man entered the store and demanded money from the store clerk and when they refused the suspect pulled out a syringe to threaten the clerk. The man then tried to pry open the till but was unsuccessful and left the store on foot.

Fiddler Likes New Aboriginal Justice Position

The Provincial Government is creating a new leadership position at the Ministry of the Attorney General's office.  The new position will focus on aboriginal justice.  Nishnawbe Aski Deputy Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says it's good news. The position will be posted shortly and Fiddler hopes to see someone in the job by the summer.

Dessert Recall

An allergy concern is causing a food recall across Ontario. The French Oven brand is recalling its Scoop and Eat Dessert Cup Carrot from the marketplace. The product was found to contain milk which is not indicated on it's label. Anyone with a milk allergy is warned not to consume the product.

Missing Teenager Found

City police are calling off a search for a missing 13 year old boy.  They found Logan Stang sometime yesterday. Police are thanking the public for their help in finding him.

Mask Making Nurses

Lakehead University's nursing students are learning about caring for others by making masks. Students partnered up recently and poured plaster on each others faces to create masks. It helped the students since they had to trust their partner to cover their mouth and nose for a brief moment.
